Natural swimming pools are a great alternative for those who wish to skip the typical swimming pool look, do away with the chemicals and chlorine and enjoy something that’s truly natural and beautiful.
Natural pools are still fairly new in the US, although they have already become well-known in other countries. They are beginning to gain popularity, in large part due to Animal Planet’s new show The Pool Master, starring Anthony Archer-Wills. Archer Wills prides himself on creating pools that look as though they were formed from natural occurrence thousands of years ago.
Natural swimming pools use plants to clean and filter the water, instead of chlorine or other chemicals. Rather than having a full filtration system running, these pools simply have a pump set up to keep the water moving over and around the roots of the plants. This allows the roots to remove bacteria and other contaminants from the water.
If you’re not looking forward to the idea of swimming in weeds and plants, not to worry. Natural swimming pools can be devised with two separate but connected pools: one for swimming in and smaller one to hold the plants. Any wildlife your natural pool happens to attract, such as frogs or insects, will stay in the plant pool and leave the swimming side alone. Having frogs around is actually beneficial, since they feast on mosquitoes and other biting insects.
When you set up a well-designed and built natural pool, you in fact create an ecosystem that looks after and cares for itself. Not only do you not have to worry about adding chlorine and balancing the pH levels, but you save hundreds of dollars a years on chemicals and filtration equipment. Not to mention, you also save on your electric costs by not having to run a filter system
